10 Styling Tips for Tall Women

1. Wear Beautiful Shoes
   
   As a tall woman, you're probably familiar with what I've termed "The Six Foot Scan." It's the reaction other people have when they see your immense height and they have to check your feet immediately to determine whether you're wearing heels. Fight the urge to yell, "Hey, there's nothing to see down there!" by taking advantage of all the extra attention your feet receive. It doesn't matter if you prefer heels, flats or athletic shoes, just choose beautiful shoes that deserve to be stared at.
2. Don't Fear Heels
   Heels seem to add confidence, sex and status to any outfit, and if 6'5" former professional basketball player Lisa Leslie can rock the high heels, there's no reason you shouldn't, too.
3. Use Oversized Accessories
   Don't be afraid of carrying a giant bag or wearing thick arm bangles. Unlike your shorter friends, oversized accessories won't make you look like you're playing dress up with your mom's clothes. Pair a thick belt with a shift dress or a big bag with a tank top and jeans. Just limit yourself to one oversized accessory per outfit in order to avoid looking clownish.
4. Show Some Skin
   You've got a lot of skin on your long body, so you might as well use it to your advantage. The trick is to play it up without looking skanky. Focus on showing off one area at a time. For instance, if you wear a backless top, pair it with a longer skirt or jeans. This way you'll grab attention without stopping hearts.
5. Highlight Your Neck
   When getting ready for a night out, your long expanse of neck and your extra décolletage are assets you should highlight. Choose interesting necklines, pull your hair back, and wear necklaces or large earrings that attract the eye.
6. Pair Narrow with Wide
   If you shy away from wide-legged pants or broad-shouldered jackets because you're afraid that menswear will make you look, well, like a man, it's time to revisit your thinking. If a runway model can pull off the look, then surely you can, too. To avoid looking "big," just make sure you only wear one oversized item at a time. For a pulled-together look, wear wide-legged pants with a tight top, or pair an oversized jacket with skinny jeans.
7. Think Bright
   Add a splash of color to your façade each day. Color adds interest to an outfit, and a woman wearing color exudes confidence. You don't have to add much, just throw on a turquoise necklace with your brown jacket or wear red heels with your little black dress. Color can also draw attention to your favorite assets, so if you love your narrow waist, wear a bright belt.
8. Be a Minimalist
   Avoid piling on everything from necklaces and belts to bracelets, hats and scarves. If you wear your height as an accessory, you don't have to add much to your look. One or two simple pieces are all it will take to complete any outfit.
9. Play With Your Hair The theory was that a short-haired-tall-girl would look too masculine. That's a lie. There's a reason why the contestants on America's Next Top Model all undergo dramatic makeovers that include major changes to their hair-tall chicks can rock any look. Because hair grows back and can always be changed, enjoy experimenting and playing with different styles.
10. Be a Drama Queen
    You may not want to play up the drama every day, but don't shy away from the occasionally dramatic eyeliner or bright red lipstick. Tall women often feel self-conscious wearing trendy makeup because of the extra attention it draws. Even if you don't think you could ever go out in public while wearing glitter eye shadow, get together with your girls and challenge yourself to try something new at least once a month.

In 2011, we'd recommend jeans that are more fitted on the thigh - lean to flared legs or moderately wide legs rather than wide legged jean styles that are too baggy or that lack shape. Be wary of a skinny leg that then widens from the knee, however: that's too much like the 90's take on bell bottoms, a look firmly out in 2011.
Palazzo pants
Palazzo pants are the resort cousin of the wide-leg pants family. While wide-leg trousers take you from the office to the bar, palazzo pants serve you best when you're lounging around on a yacht or soaking up some Mediterranean sun. Fabrics should be light and with plenty of drape and flow - silks, crepe, jersey; you can even try sheer fabrics for a look that's daring.

How to wear wide leg pants

• With heels. Flats will simply never complete the look as well as heels will; the exception is if you're carrying off a very masculine look with man-style flats.
• With a slim-fitting top to balance out the volume on the bottom half. A soft, billowing blouse can also work well but is best broken up with a waist-cinching belt.
• With utter 70s glamor: wide-leg trouser, platforms and a big floppy hat.
• Female dandy style - look to vintage icons like Katharine Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich for inspiration.
• With 40s pin-up girl flair, by pairing some wide-legged sailor pants with nautical stripes and espadrilles.

Wide-leg pants: who should wear them
A final, mandatory note about wide-legs, be they jeans, trousers or a draping palazzo: all of these styles work best of taller frames. If you're short in the legs try a pair of skinny cropped pants or ones with a subtle flare paired with heels.

Shirttail hem, tapered hem, cutaway hem... whatever you wish to label it, the basic fact remains: skirts and dresses cut longer at the back are continuing to make their way into our trend, and thus features as a major 2011 fashion trend. These hems fill the void between mini and midi; or between midi and maxi. They cover, yet they expose. And they're a simple way to freshen up your spring 2011 wardrobe with a new type of cut.

The tail hem: what is it?

A shirttail hem is traditionally cut shorter on the sides, with a longer 'tail' at the back. In 2011 the trend is more than just a shirttail hem, however: it's any manner of dresses, skirts or tops that have a hem that's shorter in front, longer in back.

Why a tail hem?

The appeal of a dipping hem is that it's playful. One side coveys the elegance of length, while the other hints at something more revealing. It can also have the appeal of looking completely effortless; especially if cut to resemble an untucked shirt, or an oversized tee.

Types of hem

There are numerous ways of creating a unique hemline with a 'tail' effect. Here are a few examples:

• A simple hem cut at an angle.
• A more traditional petal hem (where the fabric overlaps in front like petals of a flower)
• A hem that's cut from very short to very long - i.e mini to maxi.
